Thanks so much for volunteering for the Oakland Zoo adventure to observe animals and connect with wildlife. Students learned about the clever ways animals adapted to their surroundings and developed traits that help them survive. Students acted like scientists to observe animal life while focusing on their eating habits and note their habitats.
Please turn in your beach donations toward the class basket theme for the auction. You may bring items under $5. So...sunglasses, sand toys, flip flops. Due 5/10! The kindergarten graduation RSVP is due by 5/20

Your scholar learned all about animal colors and how animal differences can help them survive. In math your child studied counting up to 20 and beyond. All of the kinder friends were able to become scientists when we experimented with water and sunlight to create a rainbow. Throughout the week your superstars were reminded how Jesus teaches and helps us all of the time. Of course each student by the end of the week was able to read, write, and spell each of the 6 popcorn words. Each kindergartener is now a master of long/short vowel sounds and blending/segmenting phonemes. Please continue to have your child read to you every night so they can practice reading with expression and pausing for punctuation.
As we continue the season of Lent we will reflect on how we can grow closer to God. It is important to pray often and do activities that remind us of the love Jesus has for us.
Next week we will have our Fun Run fundraiser! Your student can turn in pledges in their folders or complete it online. Each student received a fun run packet in their folder. The fun run is from 9am-12pm and the kinders go first, parents are all invited to come and cheer on our students. Please make sure your scholar has comfortable running shoes and bottoms.
Dear Kindergarten Families,
A warm St. John welcome to our newest Shamrock, Sandor, who joined our kindergarten class this week. Please make sure to make him and his family feel at home. We now have 21 students in our class!
Many thanks to the families who have generously donated toys to the children’s hospital! We have been learning about giving to others in religion and this is the perfect age appropriate act of giving to other kids in need. I know all of the children in the hospital will appreciate playing with these toys.
Report cards will be sent out on Monday. Along with progress reports, parent teacher conferences, and emails, there shouldn’t be any surprises about your child’s strengths and what your child still needs to do to improve. Please remember that your scholar’s success is a team effort, the teacher, parents, and student need to be invested in order for your child to master kindergarten skills. If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to schedule a meeting please email me at email@example.com

Thank you to all who have already donated a toy for our service learning project to the Children’s hospital! If your family would like to help donate a toy to the Children’s Hospital we would be very grateful! Have your child help “pick out” the toy to give so they are involved! Due to infection control policies, all items must be brand new. Please bring in a toy or order one directly online by March the 15th!
Our Oakland zoo field trip permission slip and money is due at the end of next week.
Get into a routine when reading with your child. Read storybooks aloud with your scholar to help build vocabulary and discuss the books as you read them. Ask questions that address what your student thinks of the plot, characters and motivations within the story. Also, have your child summarize the story and compare it to other stories they know. Here are some kindergarten reading milestones.

We had so much fun at the Chabot Space and Science Center! A huge thank you to all of the parent drivers and chaperones. We learned all about our solar system, the water cycle, and the weather.
As a service learning project the kindergarten class will be donating new toys to the Oakland Children’s Hospital. If your family would like to help donate a toy to the Children’s Hospital we would be very grateful! Have your child help “pick out” the toy to give so they are involved! Due to infection control policies, all items must be brand new. Please bring in these items between March 4th and March 14th to the kindergarten classroom so I can take them directly to the hospital. I will also email you an amazon list of things if you would like to donate items online and have them sent straight to the hospital. https://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/3BYIKOQS3M6VF
On Monday you will be receiving a field trip packet for the Oakland Zoo. Please indicate if you would like to drive or chaperone.
Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Our field trip is next Wednesday 02/27. Just a few reminders: Bring a booster seat, bagged lunch, water bottle, green St. John shirt, free dress bottoms, comfortable shoes. Parent drivers and chaperones we will be meeting at 8:20 am for a brief meeting.
Check your student’s backpack for a popsicle stick with a “spaceman” glued to it. These handy smiling Spacemen are the perfect size to place between words so students will remember the proper spacing when writing sentences. Please practice writing and using your spaceman at home
Our kinders are beginning to prepare for the big move to 1st grade! To make sure your child is fully prepared your scholar needs to read, read, read and write, write, write! This is a group effort in order for your student to be ready, both the teacher and the families need to be active in students’ learning. Seeing and using words frequently is the best way to improve reading and writing skills.
When writing with your child at home please keep in mind that we encourage invented spelling in our classroom. When children create their own spellings for words they do not know how to spell correctly, they’re using invented spelling. They use what they know about letters, sounds and spelling patterns to spell the word as well as they can. Predicting how words will be spelled reinforces students’ understanding of the connection between letters and sounds, and lets them experiment with the spelling patterns they are learning. Invented spelling is a step on the path to conventional spelling, not an end in itself. Please look at your handouts from back to school night for additional information.
Thanks for teaming up with Ms. Emily and I to take charge of your superstar’s education! You will make such an impact!
