Kindergarten Curriculum
What We Will Be Learning This Year
Religion: This subject is an integral part of our curriculum here at St. John, considering we are a Catholic school. Students are taught about the Catholic faith, treated with dignity, and are expected to live out their own faith and Christ-like image in their own lives. In kindergarten religion, we emphasize that God made the world and He made it good. Throughout the year we will be learning about the various ways we see God daily. In addition, we will learn to pray and act in a way that maximizes our own relationship with God. We will be learning about the various seasons of the liturgical church year as well as the various feasts and holidays we celebrate during each season.
Reading/Language Arts: During the year students will begin learning to read and write. We begin the year learning letter names and letter sounds, identifying rhyming words, and then move towards reading VC and CVC words, word family words and popcorn words. We use Zoo-Phonics to develop phonemic awareness. Students will also learn concepts about print including book-handling skills and parts of books throughout the year. We use Houghton Mifflin’s Journeys, a common core English Language Arts curriculum. Kindergarten has the Catholic Identity Edition. Journeys will be our primary resource for fiction and nonfiction comprehension strategies (see common core reading standards). You’ll notice a major evolution of writing in kindergarten. Writing begins by drawing pictures, then students move towards phonetic spelling with an emphasis on properly identifying the beginning letter in the word, then the ending letter, and by the end of the year the medial letter(s). Phonetic spelling looks very different from proper academic spelling so do not be alarmed! Encourage phonetic spelling, even if it’s incorrect. Students will write labels on pictures and move towards writing phrases and sentences in the second and third trimesters. Mathematics: Students will learn to sort and classify objects, demonstrate graphing, work on measurements, cover simple geometry and shapes, practice simple addition and subtraction to 10, master counting (to 100) and learn to recognize and extend patterns. We use Houghton Mifflin’s Go Math curriculum, which is common core aligned. This curriculum emphasizes using skills by solving real world problems. We will also be using many aspects of Kim Sutton’s math program like the number line, math drills, math games, and math music to help students develop their number sense and basic addition and subtraction skills. Social Studies: Through our social studies series, students will learn about teamwork and how teamwork is applied in the real world, the significance of state, national, and international symbols, various jobs people have in the community, geography, and information about where we live, how to use a calendar, and about people, tradition and customs of the past and present. Science: In kindergarten we focus on life, earth, and physical science as well as space and the use of technology. When studying life science, students will learn about the needs of plants and animals, how living things grow and change, as well as the different kinds of plants and animals that surround us. When studying earth science, students will learn about land, water, air, weather, and seasons. During our unit on space and technology we will learn about the sky as well as simple and complex machines. Students will explore the scientific method by participating in experiments throughout the year. Handwriting: Students will learn proper writing skills (moving from left to right) and correct letter formation using a printing workbook and various other materials (applesauce, whiteboards, play-dough, etc.). Handwriting skills will be practiced across all subject areas. Enrichment Students have the opportunities for enrichment in the following areas, taught by specialists other than myself:
