Friday, November 16th, 2018 Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, This week at school our scholars learned about the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and how it is a time to be with family and friends and to reflected on what you are thankful for. Over Thanksgiving break your student’s brains still need to stay sharp. Please read with your child each and every day over the break! Remind your child to practice writing their first and last names neatly and possibly start a journal during Thanksgiving. Kindergarten fingers are ready to tie shoes! Each child is required to know how to tie their shoes before the Christmas party to receive a special surprise from Ms. Emily and I. Look on our class website www.mssanderskindergarten.weebly.com for online math and ELA resources. There is an optional paper homework assignment in your scholar’s folder if you have extra time over the holiday to practice with your child. We invited the author who created the Shelly’s Adventure book series to our school to read his story to level 1 students on December 4th. If you want to order a book we will accept any orders until Tuesday, December 4th. He will be able to autograph the book during his book visit. Parents are invited to come too! Grandparents day was a success! We appreciate all of the grandparents who came to school and was able to come to mass and celebrate with us. IXL.com also has ELA skills to practice at home like reading strategies, reading foundations, and grammar. Keep practicing tying shoes! Ms. Emily and I will have a BIG SURPRISE for the scholars that show us they mastered tying their shoes by the Christmas party. Socks and glove drive ends on Nov 15th. Blessings, Ms. Sanders Friday, November 2nd, 2018 Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, We had a fantastic week in kindergarten. We had a spooktacular Halloween bash hosted by our wonderful room parents. A huge thank you to the room parents for organizing our fun crafts, games, and bringing yummy food. A big appreciation to the families who came to enjoy and help as well and brought goody bags to share. Grandparents day is just around the corner! On November 14th your scholars can invite their grandparents to visit and enjoy mass with us in the morning. Later on there will be a social in the gym. I will be giving you more details as the day gets closer. This week we have completed a counting to 100 by 1’s and sight word test. I have noticed that many of our scholars would benefit from a little extra practice at home. Please keep reading and use online resources IXL and Raz-Kids to keep your scholar’s mind busy even after school. This is a very vital age to soak in lots of information and practicing these skills learned at school are essential! Blessings, Ms. Sanders * Reading exercises our brain. Reading is a much more complex task for the human brain rather than watching TV, for example. Reading strengthens brains connections and builds NEW connections. * Reading improves concentration.Children have to sit still and quietly so that they can focus on the story when they are reading. If the read often, they will develop the skill to do this for longer. * Reading teaches children about the world around them. Through reading a variety of books children learn about people, places, and events outside of their own experience. * Reading improves vocabulary and language skills. Children learn new words as they read. Subconsciously, they absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features effectively in their writing and speaking. * Reading develops a child's imagination. While we are engaged in a story we are also imagining how a character is feeling. Young children then bring this knowledge into their everyday play. * Reading helps children to develop empathy. As children develop they begin to imagine how they would feel in that situation. *Children who read achieve better in school.Reading promotes achievement in all subjects, not just English. Children who are good readers tend to achieve better across the curriculum. Thursday, October 25th, 2018 Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, We had an exciting week in kindergarten and are so excited for tomorrow's pumpkin patch learning adventure. Please remember to have your scholars bring their bag lunch and booster seat tomorrow and come in their green uniform top and jeans. All chaperones and drivers can meet in room 29 at 10:25. Next Wednesday is Halloween! We will celebrate as a school with a parade at 8:00-8:30 in the gym following prayer. We learned about the short and long “A” and the sight word “we”. Your scholars experimented with pumpkins as we used our 5 senses and even tasted pumpkin seeds! We wrapped up chapter 3 in math which covered counting, writing, and representing the numbers 6-9. In religion we learned about the gift sharing and how Jesus wants us to share. In social studies we defined good citizens and acted out different community helpers in our dramatic play area. Next week will be a big one, red ribbon week and the pumpkin patch! Red ribbon week has traditionally been one to focus on drug awareness. At St. John however, we like to highlight and discuss the importance of overall positive habits and life choices that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Please remember that your scholars need to bring their booster seat, a bag lunch, jeans with green uniform top. We look forward to seeing the chaperones and drivers at the school for a short meeting at 10:20 on Friday. Blessing, Ms. Sanders Friday, October 12th, 2018 Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, It was so nice meeting with all of the parents and guardians at parent-teacher conferences! I have seen lots of wonderful progress over the first eight weeks of school with our scholars. I have faith in our students’ potential to meet and succeed in all of their goals we have set for the year! As a team, (parents, child, and teacher) we can ensure student achievement to be the very best they can be. Please make sure you are reading with your child every night and pointing out popcorn words, rhyming words, and punctuation marks. I have a tab on our class website with additional math and language arts enrichment resources, so check it out! Today I have sent home your scholar’s Star Early Literacy test results. This test measures students’ vocabulary, phonics, language, and numeracy skills, monitors achievement and growth, and tracks understanding of literacy concepts aligned to the California learning standards. This is a computer-adaptive test that continually adjust the difficulty of each child’s test by choosing each test question based on the child’s previous response. I have highlighted where your student tested which compares your child’s performance to other students who have taken the same test. I have also highlighted the suggested skills that would be challenging but not too difficult for you student to continue practicing. *If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to ask me!* Our pumpkin patch field trip is just around the corner! Friday, October 26th! If you are planning on chaperoning please make sure you have completed your fingerprints and safe-environment. If you are planning on driving please make sure you have completed your fingerprints, safe-environment and turned in your insurance and driver's license information. Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, This week in kindergarten was awesome! The theme of the week was pets and how we care for them. Our super scholars learned the popcorn word “the”and learned the proper way to meet the top, middle, and bottom line when writing the letters u, v, w, x, y,and z. Your mathematicians learned different ways to make 5 and the vocab word “greater” and “less than”. In religion we learned about how God made all of the living things and he made them all good! This week in science we also had a guest speaker Mrs. Hoffman who shared lots of fun information about sunflowers and seeds. The students were able to pick the sunflower seeds from the sunflower and count them. She gave us a seed box and they were able to look at all sorts of seeds from different plants in magnifying glasses. Afterwards we did a taste test of the roasted sunflower seeds and each child was able to use their 5 senses to investigate. The fall festival is just around the corner! This is a community building experience for families and a lot of fun. All parents are required to work 2 hours at this event to make it fantastic and family friendly. The kindergarten booth is the bean bag toss and our theme is the country China! The fall festival is September 28-29th. Today we had a surprise “lovely lunch” for the students with 25+ points on classdojo. Each student with 25+ superstar behavior points were able to join me during lunchtime and have a special time to eat their lunch, have a treat, and to chat. We will have other opportunities for students with awesome behavior to have special treats and lovely lunches as the year goes on. Blessings, Ms. Sanders Friday, September 14th, 2018
Room 4 Newsletter Dear Families, This week your scholars were introduced to the word “like” and how to use it in a full sentence and reviewed the letter P,Q,R, S, and T. We also covered all of the parts of books including front cover, back cover, spine, title, title page, author, and illustrator. Your mathematicians worked on counting, writing, and representing numbers 0-5. All of Room 4 knows now how to make the sign of the cross and what it represents. We also began our science unit about forces: the pushes, pulls, and other actions that we do whenever we do work. In our first lesson your child learned that before we had machines, we had to do lots of work by hand. We talked about how machines are not magical; rather they just seem that way because there are often moving parts hidden inside. Each member of kindergarten understands that rules are made to keep us safe and manners almost always make any situation better! Make sure to ask your stellar scholar at home to share some of these facts with you! It's so much fun to see how much they absorb in just a week. We are in need of more drivers and chaperones for our pumpkin patch field trip. Please make sure to turn in your pumpkin patch slip and entrance fee by next Friday. A huge thank you to Cierra Fabrigas and Rayleena Quezada for volunteering to be our kindergarten room parents. They will be communicating about or upcoming class parties, events, and how families can sign up to participate. If you would like to know about upcoming events and to be in our class community communication please email them at [email protected] or [email protected] . *Turn in $35 to our “class fund” which will go to graduation, parties, and projects* DUE:10/06 Have a relaxing and blessed weekend.
